Cancellation of CBSE and ICSE Class 12 Board Exam: Will the State Boards Cancel Class 12 Exams? What next for College and University Admissions?

Class 12 board exams of CBSE & ISC exams have been cancelled. Just like last year, if some students wish to take board exams, CBSE will be providing an option to those students who want to take the boards.

“In the wake of COVID-19, the Class12-board exam of CBSE and ICSE have been cancelled”.  After protesting online for months, students got the first no exam year in the board exams history. The decision of cancelling the exam has been taken “in the interest of students” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi also ensured and instructed officials in making sure that the Class-12 results should be prepared with “well-defined criteria, in a fair and time-bound manner”. One review meeting was chaired by PM Modi concerning the Class-12 CBSE Board. The meeting was also attended by Information & Broadcasting and Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change Prakash Javadekar, Home Minister Amit Shah; Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani, Principal Secretary to PM, Cabinet Secretary & Secretaries of School Education & Higher Education Departments & other officials.

After the meeting, the announcement of the decision to cancel the 12th board exams was taken by PM Modi. He said: “The academic calendar has been affected by COVID-19 and the Board Exams have been causing extreme anxiety among the students, teachers and parents, which must be put to an end.” “Students should not be obligated to attempt the exams in such a traumatic situation,” PM Modi added. It is also decided that in case if some students wish to take the Class-12 board exams, that option will also be provided by the CBSE Board, when the situation is favorable like last year.

Class XII Results Criteria for CBSE and ICSE

CBSE and CISCE schools have been asked to submit the data for the students of class performance in classes 9, 10, and 11. The deadline of June 7 has been given by CISCE for sharing their detailed marks. It is anticipated that the final marks of class 12 could be considered based on the performance in the internal exams of class 12 and the past 3 years performance of the students. A final decision on this, however, is awaited.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has set up a 12 member panel to decide on the steps that need to be taken for the compilation of the results of class 12 students as per well defined objective criteria in a time bound manner. The 12 member panel includes CBSE officials, Joint Secretary from the Education Ministry’s Department of School Education, University Grant Commission officials and representatives from the State government’s Directorate of Education. The detailed report for the  Class 12 assessment criteria of CBSE board can be estimated to be released by June 14. The government needs to share the final conclusion with the Supreme court within given timelines.

The official statements of both ICSE and CBSE said that they will be announcing the criteria for Class 12 which will be quite similar to that of class 10. The board also mentioned that the students who will not be happy with their results will get an alternative chance to attempt written exams after the situation recovers.

Policy for State Board Schools

Now after this Supreme Court is also expected to take the considerations for the state board exams. Earlier, numerous states have requested the government to take a uniform decision for the students across the country including those studying in state boards as well. 

On 04/05/2021 there are chances that the Court will give similar directions to the State Boards also. To ensure the result is not delayed Mamata Sharma, Supreme Court Advocate who is handling the case for the cancellation of class 12 exams said that “We expect the Court to fix a date by which the result should be announced. To ensure that there is no further delay in the announcement of results”. Group of 47 students from parts of the country also filed fresh pleas regarding the same.

Haryana Board cancelled HBSE Board Exam

Following the decision of the cancellation of CBSE board and CISCE board Class 12 exams by the Central Government. The government of Haryana also decided the cancellation of Class 12 exams which are conducted by the state board, said by the education minister Kanwar Pal on 01/06/2021.

He said “Government of Haryana has also given the decision to cancel the Class 12 board exams which were to be directed by the Haryana Board of School Education in the state”.

MP Board cancelled MPBSE Board Exam

In view of the Covid 19 pandemic, the Madhya Pradesh government has cancelled the exams of MP Board class 12, Session 2020-21. Following the decision of the cancellation of CBSE board and ICSE board Class 12 exams by the Central Government.

Gujarat Government Cancelled GSEB Board Exam

Following the decision of the central government to cancel the CBSE class 12 board exams, the Gujarat government has also cancelled its state board class 12 exam. The Board for Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education on 02/06/2021 cancelled the state board examination of class 12th, said by the State Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasam. The beginning of the class 12 session 2021-22 was scheduled on July 1, 2021.

Maharashtra Government cancelled HSC Board Exam 

The government of Maharashtra also has cancelled the HSC Board exam of Class 12 because of the surge of coronavirus cases in the state. The board also cancelled the SSC exam 2021 for Maharashtra state, there will be new criteria for the evaluation of students. 

Uttarakhand Government cancelled UBSE Board Exam

The Uttarakhand government decided the cancellation of its class 12 UBSE Board exam this year. The State Education Minister of Uttarakhand Arvind Pandey gave the announcement that ” Class 12 board exam of Uttarakhand has been cancelled.” This was a relief for approximately 1.23 Lakhs students who were studying with the UBSE Board. 

Rajasthan Government Cancelled RBSE Board Exam

Board of Secondary Education Rajasthan (BSER) cancelled the Class 10 and Class 12 Board Exams Conducted by them, Minister of School Education Govind Singh Dotasra said. Their decision to cancel the state board exam came a day after the Central Government’s announcement to remove Class 12 board exams due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The government will soon announce the evaluation criteria for the students.

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, PGT Acounts of Delhi Public School Ghaziabad said “Schools support the government’s decision of cancellation of Class 12 Board Exams cause at present, the students are not in a state of mind to give exams, many of them also lost their loved ones due to the second wave of Covid 19”. “The decision of giving an option to the students whether to take board exams or not will give a fair chance to students. Now the Universities should also find a method of selecting students in such a way that should maintain the competitive spirit amongst the students, so that they perform with excellence, it will also help students in the long run,” she also added

The Government decision on Entrance Exams for Colleges and Universities Admissions

Following the cancellation of the board exams, the announcement on the decision on entrance exams like NEET and JEE is expected soon. Now after the decision of the Class 12 board exam being cancelled, the College admissions which were on hold because of the postponement of the academic session will now begin. The CBSE secretary has assured students that they will have their results before admissions to higher universities begin. 

The University of Delhi is most likely to start its registration process for admission to undergraduate courses on July 15. The university of Delhi has anticipated that before July 15, all school boards would declare their Class 12 board results. The Delhi University’s acting vice-chancellor P C Joshi said that they would adjust the admission process without compromising on merit.

With the emergence of the pandemic, the education scenario underwent an extreme transformation. Aligning with the changing times had been the need of the hour for the schools and Colleges.

The Covid 19 pandemic has affected the learning and development of students in academic institutions across the globe. Despite the unprecedented times the teachers, administrators have smoothened the process of learning & helped combat the situation.
